Dariel

We talk until our cups are empty and cold, and the barista has to ask us to leave so she can close the coffee shop for the day.

But I’m not ready to be done with Darcy. Maybe not ever, but certainly not now.

Sure, she’s hot as hell. But I spent the last handful of hours learning how hilarious and brilliant she is too. I’ve never considered myself as a person who’d be into vampire anything. But the way she talks about her stories makes them sound smart and absolutely intriguing.

Just like her.

“Remember that drink I owe you?” I say as we huddle against the biting wind coming off the ocean.

She wrinkles her nose up at me. “I hardly think you owe me anything. But I’ll take you up on a drink if you’re offering.”

“Oh, I’m offering.” I hold out a crooked arm and she slides hers through it. Tucking my elbow with her hand beneath it against my ribs, I marvel at how right it feels — how right she feels to be around.

After losing my last love in such a painful way to the plumber, I never thought I’d be willing to trust myself to the fickle waves of romance again.

But maybe Marcus was right. Maybe that was because I’d turned myself into a cold-hearted bastard to protect myself from getting hurt again.

And as soon as I opened myself back up to the possibility of love — or at least lust — I found what feels like a true connection with a hell of a woman.

I’m not ready to say goodnight.

“Big Chowder?” I ask, pointing across the town square at the restaurant with a bar at the back.

“Yes please.” Darcy nods fervently, shivering.

Trying to block the bulk of the wind with my body, I lead her toward the warmth of the favorite nighttime haunt of Starlight Bay’s locals.

Heat blossoms in my chest as Darcy notices my efforts and curls closer. Should I capture her in the crook of my arm and tuck her into my chest? My body aches to, but my mind is full of questions.

Instead, I hurry ahead for the last few paces between us and the indoors and haul open the door to Big Chowder. “After you, m’lady,” I say with a twisting grin and a half bow.

Laughing, she drops a momentary curtsy. The sound of her laughter makes my own smile — and other parts of me that I tell to calm the hell down — grow. “Thank you, m’lord.”

I follow her inside. Big Chowder is busy, as always. No surprise there; it’s the only bar in Starlight Bay’s tiny downtown. I inhale the comforting smell of fried food mingling with acrid beer.

“Should we get a table or head to the bar?” I ask Darcy, speaking loudly over the din.

She rakes an appraising glance over me. “That depends. What are you craving?”

Damn. This woman makes every part of me stand at attention. I shift, hoping it’s not too obvious.

And even while my body is on fire with desire, there’s another part of me that’s not so sure.
